HEALTHY CHANGES TO COHASSET'S LUNCH PROGRAM

Dear Cohasset Families,

In the fall of September 2012, Cohasset school cafeterias met tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch!

School meals have always offered students milk, fruits and vegetables, and proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Starting this year, school lunches will meet additional standards requiring:

- Age-appropriate calorie limits

- Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)

- A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes

- Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)

- More whole grains

- Less sodium

We’re always working to offer Cohasset students healthier and tastier choices, and we are proud of the selection we offer. School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families, too. We use the Nutrikids online system in the middle/high school and will be transitioning the elementary schools to this system in the coming months. Nutrikids allows you to prepay for students’ meals and monitor what your children eat each day. Visit www.myschoolbucks.com for more information.

We look forward to welcoming your children to the cafeteria!!!

Thank you!

Healthy Eating Helps You Make the Grade!

Did you know that students who are well-nourished are shown to have increased problem-solving abilities, memory, verbal fluency and creativity? Still, the challenge is to make nutritious foods that kids will actually eat! Variety and choice are key these days. And at just $2.25-$2.50 for elementary  students, Cohasset's school lunches are clearly one of the best deals around!

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions below and learn all there is to know about our Food Services Program. Happy reading!

ImageJust how healthy are school meals?

School lunches provide one-third of the recommended dietary intake for calories, protein and vitamins A and C, iron and calcium. On average a meal contains less than 30 percent of calories from fat and less than 10 percent from saturated fat. In recent years Cohasset has increased the use of whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables. All cooked products are either baked or steamed; nothing is fried.
